Reva – IOT EV Charging Station Solution Developed Using Raspberry PI, Python, and Flutter

Overview

About the project

Electric vehicles have created a lot of buzz, but public charging stations are still not as common as gas stations. So even with benefits like lower fuel and energy costs, people find it hard to manage an electric vehicle.

This project brings an innovative approach: the Reva EV charging station. It uses a Raspberry Pi as the charging controller. Large numbers of users can reach it through an app and a software infrastructure that records the charging details and rates the service accordingly. As technocrats, we wanted to analyze and identify the challenges. In this way, we contribute to green energy solutions and an eco-friendly environment for society.

Challenge

The challenge

The electric vehicle industry is booming. However, the greatest obstacle is the lack of charging stations, which makes long journeys impossible for owners. Advanced batteries are designed for a long life, but they will wear out eventually.

Also, EV charging stations face location problems. For example, how do we minimize the distance an EV must travel to charge? The answer depends on the battery capacity, the position of the charging station, the position of the driver, the demand point (where the driver wants to go), and its priority. Because mileage is limited, EVs must visit charging stations before the battery runs out.

Solution

What we built

The project focused on removing the hassle an electric vehicle owner faces in finding a charging station. That is the goal of building a smart Reva EV charging station that charges all types of electric vehicles.

● First, the user registers himself and his EVs with the app. Then he can drive up to any charging station, press a button on the app to start charging, and plug the charger into the car.

● Using the mobile app, users can select the location of nearby charging points. They can connect with any charging station by scanning the QR code on it.

● When the user connects with a charging station, AWS IoT publishes a message through MQTT and the vehicle starts charging.

● When the user finishes charging, he presses a button on the app or unplugs the cable. Then the application automatically calculates the total electricity consumption and sends the invoice for the energy used.

● Three applications make up the concept: one for the EV user, one for the host, and one web application with a dashboard that protects the site from errors.

● The EV user mobile app is an intuitive application for people who have an electric vehicle and look for a charging station. The user registers in the app and enters the current location to view nearby stations. Then the user starts charging by entering the OTP received after scanning the barcode on the device.

● The host app lets a user buy the charging controller and host it in a shop or mall. The host can then onboard it to provide charging services on a revenue-sharing basis with the controller provider.

● The web application has a responsive dashboard that acts as a super admin panel. Through it, Zehntech, as the charging controller service provider, makes sure all processes run smoothly. We also use it to handle grievances and to give maintenance and support to users and controller hosts.

Result

The result for the client

Our aim was to cut the time spent looking for charging locations and to connect the user directly with a nearby charging station. The application and device support the EV concept and reduce the need for conventional vehicles. They give quick access to charging stations and make it easy to calculate the price to pay.

As a result, anyone can offer charging facilities to EV users without worrying about the infrastructure and software to manage it. With this solution, we also promote green energy by addressing the main challenge of running an electric vehicle. Read more about our mobile app development work.
